‘Taking steps’ to raise funds & awareness for eating disorders service

Beat, the UK’s eating disorder charity, are planning a sponsored walk along Norwich’s riverside to raise funds for its essential helplines and online support services.

The “Walk & Talk” is scheduled for Saturday 26th August and it will begin at Beat’s new head office on Rosary Road, at 11am.  Members of the public as well Beat’s ambassadors and members of staff will follow the river through the city centre and through the grounds of Norwich’s historic cathedral for approximately two miles.

The walk is open to everyone and it will also be an opportunity to raise funds for the Norwich based national charity.

Commenting on the charity’s plans, Andrea Auburn, Community Fundraising Officer, said:

“Sufferers of eating disorders face stigma, secrecy and misunderstanding.

“We wanted to create a safe, open and friendly space for discussion, at the same time as raising funds for our services. Norwich is a special site for our first “Walk & Talk” event, as the charity has been based here since 1989.’

Pauline Robinson, from North Walsham, is one of the many volunteers who will take part to the event.

Ten years ago, she lost her child, Charlotte, who had suffered from eating disorders. “I wish Charlotte could have experienced the awareness that Beat has worked so hard to gain.

“The Walk & Talk is a fantastic way to share experiences with others and to keep the fight going for all those with such a very serious illness”, said Pauline.

At least 725,000 men and women of all ages and backgrounds, are affected by an eating disorder in the UK. Anorexia has the highest mortality rate of any mental illness but recovery is possible.

Finding treatment quickly is crucial in saving lives and Beat can provide the first contact to guide and support people in accessing the treatment they need. The charity supports thousands of people every year through its helplines, message board and online services, which are funded by supporters.

Beat’s “Walk & Talk” will take place on Saturday 26th August, starting at 11am from Beat’s office courtyard at 19 Rosary Road, Norwich, NR1 1SZ.

To join the walk, contact Andrea on 01603 753335 or email fundraising@beateatingdisorders.org.uk. Entry is £5 and includes a Beat t-shirt, fundraising pack, and goodybag on the day of the walk. Beat is asking every walker to aim for a target of £100 for the walk.  For more information, or to arrange an interview, please contact the Press Office on 01603 753316 or media@beateatingdisorders.org.uk.
