The letter outlines how people with eating disorders are at serious risk if the Bill comes into law in its current form. The bill is a proposed law that aims to allow terminally ill adults in England and Wales to request for help in ending their life.
There aren’t currently any provisions within the bill that would prevent adults with eating disorders from being classified as terminally ill.
Tom Quinn, Beat's Director of External Affairs has signed the letter. He said:
'There has been a lot of debate about this Bill in recent months and we have heard many differing voices and points of view. However, our position is clear: recovery from an eating disorder is always possible and eating disorders should never be treated as terminal.
'Every day we hear from people who have gone from a place of despair and hopelessness to being in recovery and living a full life, free of their eating disorder. Recovery can be an immensely challenging journey, but an eating disorder is not a death sentence and everyone affected must be given dedicated and thorough support to ensure they have the best possible chance of this.'
