Eating disorders have one of the highest mortality rates of all mental health disorders, posing a high risk for both mental and physical health. Many acute medical professionals feel they need more training to manage these challenges. It is important that professionals feel confident in accurately identifying the signs of risk, understanding the importance of early identification and when to make urgent referral of patients for specialist assessment.
There is a current national focus on ensuring that people with eating disorders get the care they need in a timely fashion, with clinical standards aiming to ensure that patients get the best possible care in acute medical settings through rapid and appropriate assessment and treatment, supported by a skilled, multidisciplinary team.
